Core Dogecoin Developer Ross Nicoll to Step Away from Project

He talked all about ‘overwhelming’ stress being the primary reason behind his decision.

Ross Nicoll, known as one of the core developers behind the famous Dogecoin meme cryptocurrency has announced that he is stepping away from the project, calling attention to the “overwhelming” stress it’s caused him, as well as the potential conflict of interest factor, too.

Nicoll plans to stay on as an advisor but will be “handing over everything [he] can to the Dogecoin Foundation,” as he stated in a blog post on Wednesday.

He called attention to the fact that his departure isn’t exactly absolute or instantaneous as well. “I’d emphasize this is a change of role, and there’s a transition period. I’m not suddenly gone” he said in a conversation with CoinDesk on LinkedIn.

However, if there is a primary reason for him to be stepping away from the project, it’s “primarily [because] the stress involved is overwhelming.”

“There is a further complication that my employer for my day job is moving into the blockchain space, leading to a risk of conflict of interest if I remain as a director,” he further added. Nicoll also serves as a software engineer at Google.

The Dogecoin Foundation, which Nicoll said he’d be handing over everything to, was re-established in August, and also boasts Vitalik Buterin as an advisor. Buterin is the co-founder of Ethereum. It was initially set up in 2014 but had to be dissolved due to inactivity over time. The aim of the foundation is to support dogecoin’s development by way of advocacy, governance, and trademark protection.

Nicoll also said, “I have confidence in their ability to steer Dogecoin into the next phase, in a way that I do not have the mindset for.”
