Disney Preps Metaverse Push, CEO Describes it As “Next Great Storytelling Frontier”

Disney had promoted an executive to a position designed to oversee the company’s efforts in the metaverse.

There is a distinct possibility that we may all yet see a rather enviable library of Disney’s cast of characters, properties, and even experiences all pop up in the metaverse, as the future of the internet’s vision develops further. The juggernaut that is Disney is making some power moves within the space, the latest of which includes announcing the creation of a brand new position to oversee metaverse specific plans.

Bob Chapek, CEO of Disney, told his employees in an internal email that the company has in fact promoted Mike White from within to “a new role: Senior Vice President, Next Generation Storytelling and Consumer Experiences.” This position shall be laser-focused on work put in by Disney towards Metaverse experiences. This news was reported first by Reuters.

Chapek described the near 100 years of innovation in technology in the email and also drew attention to the development of various entertainment properties, as well as how all of that can come to a head in the metaverse.

“This is the so-called metaverse, which I believe is the next great storytelling frontier and the perfect place to pursue our strategic pillars of Storytelling Excellence, Innovation, and Audience Focus,” Chapek wrote. “Teams across the company are exploring this new canvas, and I have been blown away by what I’ve seen.”

The firm’s ambitions within the space have been hinted at previously by Chapek. For instance, last November, he told investors that the company is indeed preparing for “our own” metaverse. The company also posted about some job liftings for NFT experts, which could be seen as a signal regarding their potential integration into the metaverse in the not-so-distant future.

“While the storytelling that will define our metaverse presence will of course emanate from our creative teams, Mike will establish our overall vision and strategy for the consumer journey through these new story worlds,” Chapek further added in the email, which also delved into the collaboration across the various divisions of Disney and potential partnerships.
