Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road Marketplace has taken to Medium to announce he’s auctioning a new line of NFTs that break down various points in his life from childhood to his time in prison.

The Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection is set for a launch on Thursday at the Art Basel event in Miami and will be minted on Ethereum. The auction will run on the super rare NFT platform which is curated by Entoptic, from December 2-8. Including ten items from Ulbricht like his artwork, writings as well as original animations by digital artist Levitate, it’ll also come with a voice-over by Ulbricht himself.

Ulbricht wrote “I was 29 years old when I was arrested. Suddenly, sitting in prison, I had time for drawing again.”

“I reconnected with my artistic side, producing illustrations that told the story I was going through” he continued.

Ulbricht was incarcerated back in 2013 and admitted he had no clue about it when someone suggested he sell his art as digital tokens of ownership or NFTs. Thanks to the aid of others, though, he was able to not only grasp the concept but also start their development, too.

Ulbricht’s website FreeRoss.org, run by his mother Lyn, states that the NFT’s launch will serve as a fundraiser for not only prisoner support but her son’s freedom efforts, as well. On the matter of the auction and its proceeds, Ulbricht stated he wanted to “help kids travel to visit their moms and dads in prison.”

Ulbricht launched Silk Road in 2011, a dark web marketplace site where just about anything could be traded via the use of bitcoin. While the site began as a place to trade illegal drugs, it quickly began to include weapons and various other contraband items along the way. In 2013, the website was shut down followed by Ulbricht’s arrest.

Ulbricht was convicted in February 2015 of conspiracy to launder money, hacking, running a criminal enterprise, and narcotics trafficking, and was sentenced to 2 life sentences plus 40 years.

“Prison shatters families. It shatters communities. And the kids are the ones who suffer.” he said regarding the damage he sees around him.
